What to text your ex after no contact (and what to never send)

The short answer: after no contact, send one short, light message about something real between the two of you, something she can answer in a line or ignore without it being awkward. No apology, no "I miss you", no "can we talk?". Send it in the early evening on an ordinary weekday, then leave it alone.

You've done the hard part.

For weeks you haven't texted her. You haven't liked her photos, you haven't asked her friends how she's doing, and you haven't driven past her place "by accident". Some nights it felt like holding your breath underwater.

Now you're sitting with your phone, and there's a message in your notes app you've rewritten about forty times.

This is the moment most men get wrong. Not because they're stupid, but because after weeks of silence, everything they've been holding in wants to come out in one go. So the first text turns into an apology, a confession and a question about the future, all at once.

The first message after no contact has one job, and it's a small one. Here's how to get it right.

First, check you're actually ready

Give no contact at least 30 days, and only end it once you also feel steady. Before you send anything, be honest with yourself about these:

  • Could you handle no reply? If silence would send you spiraling into a second and third message, you're not ready yet.
  • Have you stopped checking her social media? If you're still watching her stories to read her mood, the text will come from that anxious place, and she'll feel it.
  • Are you sleeping and eating like a normal person? It sounds basic. It matters. A tired, wound-up man writes needy messages.
  • Do you want to send it, or do you need to? Wanting is fine. Needing means you're hoping one text will make the pain stop, and it won't.

If you're not there yet, give it another week or two. Nothing about your chances gets worse because you waited until you could text her like a calm, decent man.

What the first text has to do

Forget getting back together for a moment. The first text isn't the place for that conversation.

Its only job is to reopen the door a crack, in a way that feels easy and pleasant for her. That means it should be:

  • Short. One or two lines. If she has to scroll, it's too long.
  • Light. Nothing about the breakup, the relationship, or how hard the last few weeks have been for you.
  • Easy to answer, and easy to ignore. No question she has to deal with. No pressure. If she wants to reply, she can. If she doesn't, nothing awkward has happened.
  • Specific to the two of you. A message that could be sent to any woman reads like it was copied from the internet. Which, usually, it was.

When it lands right, she reads it and thinks "Huh. That's nice." And maybe she smiles before she remembers why she's not supposed to.

What to never send

These are the messages that undo weeks of good work in a few seconds.

"I miss you." It's true, and she knows it's true. Saying it puts her in the position of having to respond to your feelings, which is exactly the weight she was trying to get away from.

"Can we talk?" To her, this reads as "brace yourself for a heavy conversation". Most women will say no, or say yes and dread it.

"I've changed." If you have, she'll see it over time. Announcing it sounds like every other man who said the same thing and hadn't.

The long apology. You might owe her one, and there may be a time for it. The first text after weeks of silence isn't it. A wall of text makes her feel she has to process the whole relationship again.

"Hey" or "How are you?" Not harmful, just flat. It gives her nothing to respond to and makes it easy to leave you on read.

Anything sent after 10pm or after a drink. Late-night texts look lonely, even when they're not.

Anything that mentions another man, or another woman. Fishing for information or trying to make her jealous never comes across the way you hope.

First text examples

These examples show the shape of a good first message. Don't copy them word for word. The whole point is that yours should be about your relationship, not someone else's.

The shared-memory nod. You reference something real and good from your time together, without making it heavy.

  • "Walked past that Italian place with the terrible waiter today. Still can't believe he brought us three desserts."
  • "Someone at work just put on that awful song from the wedding in Leeds. Thought of you instantly."

Why this works: it reminds her of a good moment you shared, it shows you can think about the two of you without falling apart, and it doesn't ask anything of her.

The genuine, low-key update. Something that's true about your life, which she'd be interested in, without any showing off.

  • "Finally sorted the garden. Your tomato plants actually survived."
  • "Took the dog back to the beach where he ran off. He behaved this time, which is a first."

Why this works: it shows life has carried on in a good direction, and it gives her something easy to reply to if she wants.

The thoughtful nudge. You noticed something that matters to her.

  • "Saw your mom's charity run got finished. Hope it went well for her."
  • "Heard your new job's going well. Really pleased for you."

Why this works: there's no angle in it, and it shows maturity. Only use it if it's true and you'd say it to a friend.

What all three have in common is that she can reply with a line or not reply at all, and either way you come out looking like a man who's doing okay.

If you'd rather work from a full step-by-step plan, the original Text Your X System book lays out the 30-day reset, the 7-word text and what to do when she replies.

When to send it

  • Ideally in the early evening on a weekday, and never late at night.
  • On a normal day. Avoid anniversaries, her birthday, Valentine's Day and Christmas. Those days carry too much meaning, and your message gets lost in it.
  • When you're in a good mood. If you've had a rough day, wait. You'll write better tomorrow.

What to do when she replies (or doesn't)

If she replies warmly, match her energy, don't exceed it. If she sends two lines, you send two lines. Keep it light and let the conversation end on a good note, ideally before it fizzles out. You don't need to rush to the next stage. Leaving her wanting a bit more is a good place to stop.

If she replies with something short, like "haha" or "thanks", that's still a reply. Don't read it as rejection and don't push for more. A short, friendly answer from you and then let it rest is the right move.

If she doesn't reply, don't send a second message straight away. A double text tells her you were waiting on her answer, and it turns a nice moment into pressure. Go back to your own life, give it about a week, then try once more with something different.

If she replies angrily, stay calm. Don't argue, defend yourself or explain. Something like "Fair enough, I didn't mean to upset you. Take care." and then step back. How you handle a bad reply often says more to her than any good message could.

The problem with examples

Here's the honest limit of any article like this one.

Examples help you see the shape of a good first text. But the message that actually works is built from your history: the memories that mean something to her, how the breakup happened, what you've already sent, and where things stand now. A text about a terrible waiter only works if there was a terrible waiter.

Most men know this, which is why they end up staring at their phone for an hour, trying to turn generic advice into something that fits their situation.

If that's where you are, that's exactly why I built Text Your X AI. You tell it what happened and upload screenshots of your messages. It gives you a personalized 7-word text, when to send it, and an Ex-Back Blueprint for your next move. It's $47, one payment, and the original Text Your X System book is included free. It's from the team behind the Text Your X System, which over 3,000 men have bought.

Whichever way you go, keep it short, keep it light, and send it from a good place. The first text doesn't need to fix everything. It just needs to open the door.
