If you've spent any time searching how to get your ex back, someone has told you about the no contact rule. Cut off all contact, usually for 30 days, and she'll start to miss you.
And you've probably wondered whether it actually works, or whether you're just giving her a month to forget you exist.
The honest answer is that no contact can help, but not in the way most men think. Silence on its own doesn't bring anyone back. What it does is stop you making things worse, and give you the space to become someone she'd want to hear from again. Whether it works depends almost entirely on why you're doing it and what you do with the time.
What no contact actually means
No contact means you stop starting conversations with her for a set period. No texts, no calls, no voice notes, no emails. No liking her posts or watching her stories so she sees your name. No messages passed through her friends or her sister. No turning up where you know she'll be.
If she gets in touch during no contact, the Text Your X System's advice is to stick to your 30 days anyway. Messages from her this early are often emotional reactions rather than a real wish to get back together. If something practical genuinely needs an answer, keep it to one short, polite line and don't use it as an opening to talk about the relationship.
Why no contact can help
It stops the damage. In the first weeks after a breakup, most men do things they later wince at. The long messages at 2am. The "can we just talk" texts. Showing up with flowers. Each one tells her she was right to leave. No contact puts a stop to that before it gets worse.
It lets the heat die down. Breakups often end in arguments, tears or cold silence. If you keep talking straight away, every conversation picks up where the fight left off. Time apart lets the worst of those feelings fade, for both of you.
It changes the last thing she remembers. If the final weeks were you chasing and pleading, that's the version of you in her head. A period of calm silence replaces it. She stops seeing a man who's falling apart, and starts wondering how you're doing.
It gives you room to get your head straight. This is the part men skip, and it's the part that matters most. More on that below.
Why it fails for so many men
They treat it as a trick. They count down the days like a timer, expecting her to crack on day 29. When she doesn't, they panic. The men who get something out of no contact treat it as time for themselves, and stop watching the clock.
They half do it. A like on her photo here, a "happy birthday" there, a story posted at midnight that's obviously aimed at her. Each one resets the clock and shows her you're still orbiting.
They do nothing with the time. Thirty days of lying in bed scrolling through old photos doesn't make you any more attractive at the end. If you come out of no contact the same man who went in, you'll have the same conversation that ended things.
They blow it on the first message. After weeks of silence, they send a paragraph about everything they've realized and how much they miss her. That message carries all the pressure of the last month at once, and she backs away again.
They use it when it doesn't fit. If you live with her, share children, or work together, full no contact isn't possible. Trying to force it just looks cold and makes daily life harder for both of you.
How long should no contact last?
There's no magic number that flips a switch in her. Thirty days is a good guide for most breakups, and what you do with them matters more than the count.
As a guide, give it at least 30 days for most breakups, and closer to 45 if she's still angry with you or it ended in a big blow-up. Go longer, too, if you've already sent a lot of emotional messages since. If you've broken no contact recently, count from your last message, not from the breakup.
A better test than the calendar is how you feel. You're ready to end no contact when:
- You can think about her without your stomach dropping.
- You'd be okay if she didn't reply.
- You've stopped checking her social media.
- You've made real changes in your own life, ones you'd keep even if she never came back.
If you can't say yes to those yet, keep going. Waiting another two weeks costs you very little. Sending the wrong message too early can cost you a lot.
What to do during no contact
This is where the work is.
Look after the basics. Sleep, eat properly, go easy on the drink. It sounds dull, but a rested man makes better decisions and writes better messages.
Get your body moving. Gym, running, football, boxing, long walks. It burns off the restlessness and you'll feel better within a couple of weeks. And yes, if she does see you again, it'll show.
See people. Say yes to the invitations. Ring the friend you've been meaning to call. Isolation makes the obsessive thoughts louder.
Be honest about what went wrong. Not the version where it was all her fault, and not the version where you're the worst man alive. What actually happened? What did she complain about, more than once? What would you do differently? Write it down.
Put her out of easy reach. Mute her on social media. Move her chat out of your main screen. If you know you'll crack after a few drinks, give your phone to a mate.
Erase Her is the one for the nights you can't stop thinking about her.
Write the messages you want to send, and don't send them. Put them in your notes app. Read them the next morning. You'll be glad you waited.
What if you can't do no contact?
Plenty of men can't go silent. You share kids, you still live together while the house is sorted, or she's at the next desk.
In that case, keep contact limited and practical. Talk about the children, the bills, the logistics. Be polite, reliable and calm. Don't use the school run or the washing-up as a chance to bring up the relationship, and don't sulk or go cold to make a point.
This version can do the same job as no contact. She gets to see a steady, decent man every day instead of one who's begging or brooding. That steadiness can be what starts to change her mind.
How to end no contact
When the time's right, the first message should be short, light and about something real between the two of you. No apology, no "I miss you", no "can we talk". It should be easy for her to answer and easy for her to ignore.
I've written a full guide on this, with examples and what to do with each kind of reply: What to text your ex after no contact.
So, does it work?
No contact works when it's used as a reset rather than a strategy on its own. It stops the damage, cools things down and gives you the time to become a man she'd be glad to hear from. The silence doesn't get her back. What you do during it and what you say after it are what make the difference.
That second part is where most men get stuck, because the right message depends on your relationship: how it ended, what you've already sent, what she said, and what's going on now.
If you'd like help with that part, Text Your X AI was built for it. You tell it what happened and upload screenshots of your messages.
