If you're reading this, you're probably in the worst part. She's gone, or she's going, and your head keeps running the same loop: what did I do, what can I say, how do I fix this before it's too late?
I struggled with women myself for years, and I've spent more than five years coaching men through breakups. The men who get a second chance are rarely the ones who try hardest in the first week. They're the ones who slow down, get their head straight, and give her a reason to look at them again.
Here's the plan, stage by stage.
Stage 1: Stop the damage
Before you can win anything back, you have to stop losing ground. In the first days after a breakup most men do some version of the same things:
- Sending long messages explaining how they feel.
- Asking for "one more conversation" to talk it through.
- Promising they'll change.
- Turning up at her place or her work.
- Getting her friends or family to put in a word.
- Watching her social media and reacting to every post.
Every one of these comes from love and panic, and every one of them tells her the same thing: he's not okay, and it's my job to deal with it. That's the feeling she was trying to get away from.
If you've already done some of this, don't beat yourself up. Almost everyone does. Just stop now. One calm line is enough to close it off: "I hear you. I'm going to give you some space. Take care of yourself." Then put the phone down.
Stage 2: Take real space
This is the stage most men want to skip, and it's the one that matters most.
Space does two jobs. It lets the heat go out of the breakup, so she stops associating you with the arguments and the pressure. And it gives you time to get steady, so that when you do talk again you're not the same anxious man she left.
For most breakups that means at least 30 days of no contact. If she's angry with you, or it ended in a big blow-up, give it closer to 45. No texts, no likes, no "accidental" run-ins.
If you can't go silent because you share children, a home or a workplace, keep contact limited and practical instead. Talk about logistics, be polite and reliable, and don't use those moments to bring up the relationship.
I've gone through how no contact works, how long to do it and why it fails for so many men in Does no contact work on women?. Read that before you start.
Stage 3: Understand why it really ended
The reason she gave you and the real reason aren't always the same. "I need to focus on myself" or "I just don't feel the same" are often the polite version of something that built up over months.
Sit down with a pen and be honest. Not the version where you're the good guy, and not the version where you're a monster. Just what happened. Look for patterns rather than single events:
- Did she feel heard? If she raised the same issue again and again and nothing changed, that wears love down faster than any one argument.
- Did she still feel attracted? Comfort can slide into neglect. Letting your health go, stopping the effort, always being on your phone.
- Did she feel safe and respected? Jealousy, checking her phone, temper, drinking. These are hard to look at, but they matter most.
- Did you pull away? A lot of men go quiet when life gets heavy, through stress, work or low mood. To her, it can feel like you'd stopped caring.
Pick the two or three things that come up most. That's your work for the next few weeks.
Stage 4: Fix it for real, quietly
This is where most of the change happens, and she won't see most of it. That's the point.
Work on the things you found in Stage 3. If you drank too much, cut it out. If your temper was the problem, find out what sets it off and get help with it. If you'd stopped looking after yourself, start training and sleeping properly. If your life had shrunk to work and her, rebuild it: friends, hobbies, things that are yours.
I used to be overweight. Getting into shape took me eighteen months of hard training, and it didn't come from one big decision. It came from showing up, again and again. Getting your life back after a breakup works the same way.
Two rules for this stage:
- Don't announce it. "I've changed" is the line every man uses. If you've changed, she'll see it over time.
- Do it for you. If the only reason you're going to the gym is to win her back, you'll stop the day she doesn't respond. Change that's for you lasts, and she'll feel the difference.
If the hardest part right now is not thinking about her every minute of the day, Erase Her From Your Mind is my book on getting your head back.
Stage 5: Reconnect with one light message
When the space is done and you feel steady, you can reach out. The first message has one job: reopen the door a crack, in a way that feels easy for her.
That means short, light and specific to the two of you. No apology essay. No "I miss you". No "can we talk?". Something she can reply to in a line, or ignore without it being awkward.
Send it in the early evening on a weekday, on an ordinary day rather than a birthday or anniversary. Then leave it. If she doesn't reply, don't double text. Wait about a week and try once more with something different.
There are examples of good first texts, and exactly what to do with each kind of reply, in my guide on what to text your ex after no contact.
Stage 6: Rebuild slowly
If she replies warmly, the temptation is to rush. Don't. Match her energy rather than exceeding it, and end conversations on a good note, before they fizzle out.
After a few easy exchanges, suggest something low-key in person: a coffee, a walk, something you used to enjoy. Keep it short. Leave the big "where are we" conversation until she's the one leaning in.
And expect some back and forth along the way. A warm week followed by a quiet one doesn't mean it's over. I've written about how to read that in Mixed signals from your ex.
What makes it harder (and what to do about it)
She's seeing someone new. It isn't automatically the end, but it changes the timeline. Give it longer and don't try to compete with him. There's more on it in my new partners and moving on guides.
You cheated. Then the work in Stage 3 and 4 is bigger, and an honest apology matters more. I've written a separate guide on getting your ex back after you cheated.
She blocked you. Respect it. Don't get around it with new numbers or accounts. That turns a door that might reopen later into one that stays shut.
You're married. The steps are the same, but children, a shared home and lawyers change how you take them. Start with my marriage and separation guides.
When to stop
Sometimes the honest answer is that she's done. If she's told you clearly and calmly more than once, if she's asked you to stop contacting her, or if being around you makes her feel unsafe, respect it completely.
Letting go isn't failing. The work you did on yourself still counts. It makes your next relationship better, whether that's with her one day or with someone else.
Making the plan fit your situation
A step-by-step plan is a starting point. The hard part is applying it to your relationship: how long your space should be, what your first message should say, and what to do with the reply she actually sends.
That's why I built Text Your X AI. You tell it what happened and upload screenshots of your messages. It gives you a personalized 7-word text, when to send it, and an Ex-Back Blueprint for your next move. It's $47, one payment, and the original Text Your X System book is included free. It's from the team behind the Text Your X System, which over 3,000 men have bought.
Whatever you decide, go slowly. The man who wins her back isn't the one who pushes hardest. He's the one who gets himself together and gives her room to notice.
